Episode 24 - Dystopian Jozi Geekery with Abi Godsell!

Abi Godsell has been writing sci-fi, horror, fantasy and urban magic short stories since 2006 with a number of her stories published in speculative fiction anthology magazine Something Wicked, the first when she was just 16 years old.

Born and raised in Johannesburg, Abi used her hometown as the backdrop for IDEA WAR, a series of interwoven young adult short stories set in a futuristic and dystopian vision Jozi.  Volume 1 of IDEA WAR was published in November, 2013

This week Abi was part of an initiative involving two other local sci fi authors and the team at Wordsmack Publishers - together, they hosted an event called 'A Future Jozi': Abi, Mico Pisanti and Jason Werbeloff all launched Joburg-centri sci fi works at the event and they created a space where they could strengthen the local writing community by having the public pop by and chat with the authors themselves.

Abi was very kind enough to sit down with us to discuss all manner of topics including:

 - her exposure to strong, female literary characters while she was growing up in a houseful of books

 - how the desire personalise the stories she was reading, such as relocating scenes to her school for example, led to doing her own writing

 - and how the constructive criticism she received from the Something Wicked team helped push her to be a better writer.

Plus we learn how you can use science fiction as a framework through which to view, and develop government policy - and we really do not mean that in a pejorative way.
