ICON is the longest running comics and gaming convention in South Africa and holds a very special place in the hearts of most geeks. This year it will, again, be held across the Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the end of the July school holidays and will be taking place at Jabula Recreation Centre in Sandringham, Johannesburg. Tickets are available at the door with plenty of activities across the spectrum of geekdom - cosplay competition, board and wargaming, Magic and other collectible card games and a host more, including another Great Geek Challenge by the Geek of All Trades Podcast team.
We got to sit down with Grant Charlton, the head of the ICON organisational committee, to discuss all manner of things including:
- the history behind the beginning, and progression, of Grant's comic store Outer Limits
- the identities of those responsible for the creation of ICON, and the real reasons behind their decision
- and how some of the core traditions of ICON, such as dodgy hot dogs and the charity donation at the end of the con, all started.
Plus, we find out that while ICON is the longest running consecutive comics and gaming convention, it isn't the oldest geek convention.
